TMJ TREATMENT OAKLEIGH

Managing Jaw Tension, Clenching, and Grinding-related Discomfort

If you’re dealing with persistent jaw tension, clenching, teeth grinding, or related headaches — and an occlusal splint alone isn’t giving you the relief you’d hoped for — it may be worth having your symptoms assessed.

At Wellness Dental Oakleigh, our team works with patients to understand what’s contributing to their TMJ symptoms and to discuss a management approach that suits them. Book a consultation to talk through your symptoms and the options that may be appropriate for you.

UNDERSTANDING TMJ DISORDERS

What is TMJ/TMD?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When the joint and surrounding muscles become strained — often through clenching, grinding stress, or overuse — it can lead to temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent jaw pain or tightness
  • Clicking or popping when moving the jaw
  • Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably
  • Headaches, particularly around the temples
  • Facial muscle tension
  • Ear discomfort or pressure

If you are experiencing any of these, a consultation with a dentist at Wellness Dental Oakleigh can help identify what’s contributing to your symptoms and what management may be appropriate.

A Non-Surgical Approach to Managing
TMJ Muscle Tension

TMJ symptoms have multiple possible contributors, so management is usually tailored to the individual after assessment. Approaches may include occlusal splints, lifestyle and habit guidance, physiotherapy referral, and — for selected patients where chronic muscle overactivity is contributing — non-surgical treatment delivered in-chair to help reduce overworked jaw muscle activity.

Whether any of these are suitable for you is something we’ll discuss together at your consultation. There isn’t a single approach that works for everyone, and we don’t recommend treatment without a proper assessment of what’s going on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If jaw pain, clicking, headaches, or facial muscle tension are affecting your day-to-day comfort, or if you’re aware of clenching or grinding (especially overnight), it’s worth having a dentist take a look.
TMJ symptoms can have multiple contributors — including stress, clenching and grinding habits, bite issues, joint strain, and muscle tension. Because the causes vary, management is usually tailored to the individual.
TMJ disorders aren’t always something that can be “cured” — for many people, the goal is ongoing management of symptoms rather than a one-off fix. A management plan may include several different approaches over time.
In many cases, yes. Splint therapy often forms part of a broader TMJ management approach. We’ll talk through how any other treatment fits with what you’re already doing.
Most patients return to normal daily activities shortly after a typical in-chair appointment. Specific aftercare guidance will be provided based on what treatment is performed.
Suitability is determined after a consultation and clinical assessment. Not every patient with TMJ symptoms is a candidate for every treatment option.
All clinical procedures carry potential risks and side effects. These will be explained in detail at your consultation so you can make an informed decision before proceeding.
