Do you try to hide your gums when you smile and talk?
A gum lift may be the solution to regaining confidence in your smile
New Patient Offers
If your gums rest too low on your teeth and you are unhappy with your smile, you may be a candidate for a gum lift.
Gum contouring (also known as a gum lift) is s relatively simple procedure which is done in one visit with a local anaesthetic.
What is a gum lift?
A gum lift essentially raises the gum line. The severity of a gummy smile is determined by the gum-to-tooth ratio. There are three basic categories of a gummy smile:
- Mild – Your gum tissue covers up to 25 per cent of the length of your teeth
- Moderate – Your gum tissue covers between 25 and 50 per cent of your teeth
- Advanced – Gum tissue encompasses 50 to 100 per cent of your smile
Don’t worry, the whole process is pain-free!
The process itself involves a dental laser which is used to remove the excess gum and seal the affected tissue as it progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gum shaping, also known as gum contouring or gingival sculpting, is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves reshaping or removing excess gum tissue to improve the appearance of your smile. It is typically done using a laser or dental instruments to carefully trim the gum tissue.
People with an uneven gum line, excessive gum tissue, or gummy smile are good candidates for gum shaping. However, before undergoing any cosmetic dental procedure, your dentist will evaluate your oral health to ensure you have healthy teeth and gums.
Gum shaping is typically performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience some discomfort or sensitivity, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
The duration of gum shaping depends on the extent of the treatment needed to achieve the desired results. Typically, it can take 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete the procedure.
Like any dental procedure, gum shaping carries some risks, such as infection, bleeding, or gum recession. However, these risks are minimal when the procedure is performed by an experienced dentist or periodontist. Some common side effects include swelling, discomfort, and sensitivity, which usually subside within a few days to a week after the procedure. Your dentist will discuss the potential risks and side effects with you before the procedure to help you make an informed decision.
